Introducing the Humanure Toilet

The humanure toilet at 107 Garden. It's used in the shed but in 2015 it will be in the tiny house. Cost: $25

We are in poop denial. Human poop denial. We flush, flush, flush, and create sewage which in turn creates nasty situations like don’t swim in the ocean for 72 hours after it rains! This is not okay folks!

Gardeners are happy to compost chicken poop, horse poop, goat poop, sheep poop, all kinds poops but the composting stops at human poop.

Two bin compost set-up. Upcycled pallets and scavenged lumber. Hardware cost: $65

There is a very simply remedy: The Humanure Toilet.

Humanure composting in less than 100 words

Humanure toilet set-up includes: toilet box, toilet buckets, biofilter material such as saw dust, peat moss, or rice hulls, long handled brush, composting bins, and coarse cover material such as straw.

Important note: Please refer Joseph Jenkin's book The Humanure Handbook to learn and understand all the nitty gritty of humanure composting!

Hardware cost for the two bins was nearly $65! Turns out that door stops are not cheap and neither are lag bolts!

Humanure composting is nothing akin to sewage.  Sewage is poop in water along with whatever else folks thought should be flushed or washed down the drain.

Humanure composting is the wonderful aerobic composting of both human poop and urine along with food scraps and garden trimmings. We are returning nutrients and moisture to Mother Earth.
