Harvey Ussery on Designing a Pasture Shelter

I highly recommend Harvey Ussery's book The Small-Scale Poultry Flock: An all-natural approach to raising chicken and other fowl for home and market growers. It's my hands down favorite, go-to book. His approach is practical, holistic, and focused on folks' doing for themselves. Check out the bit below from his chapter on butchering poultry. The chapter later includes some of the most detailed pictures ya can find in any book. His website (themodernhomestead.us) is a terrific resource too.

Flock keepers often try to find someone else to do their culling for them. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve received a call out of the blue, a begining flockster on the other end of the line who started his first flock blithely assuming that of course it would be easy to find someone to butcher his birds for an appropriate fee. Reality sets in as I assure him that, while dressing out birds for my own table is good work, doing it for someone else is drudgery—and I don’t do drudgery, at any price.
