Understanding Seeds: Heirloom, Open-Pollinated, & F1 - PVP43

Show Notes

So many seeds, so many misunderstandings! Heirloom seeds might mean only pre-1900 seeds or seeds with a history pre-1940 depending on who you are chatting with but the bottom line is that heirloom seeds are seeds that have been passed down through the generations! Simple!

I grew out black kulli corn in 2014. In the smallest of plots these massive plants were towering at 12+ feet! The saved seed was shared far and wide!

F1 seeds. Just not a wonderful thing. Saving seeds from F1 plants will never on any of the days be true to type. Whereas open pollinated seeds will be true to type. Meaning open pollinated seeds will beget more of what you planted, generation after generation. F1 on the other hand will not. F1 seeds are not an investment in the homestead!

There are so many seed houses! Last year I shared my Five Favorite Seed Houses.

Gardens Across America is a project of Joseph Simcox to connect gardeners and gardens through seeds and seed sharing. Or if you just want to purchase some fantastic and rare seeds that you will not find anywhere else, check out the Rare Vegetable Consortium

Don't forget about other places to score seeds: seed swaps, friends and neighbors, online swaps, and your grocery store. Plus, organizations like Seed Savers Exchange, Southern Exposure, and the list goes on! Spread your seed dollars around!

If you are new to seed saving or just want to learn more about seed saving, check out Suzanne Ashworth's book Seed to Seed. Keep the seeds in the hands of the people by saving and sharing seeds! Each year you can select for wonderfulness in your garden and share that bounty with others! Seeds are for growing!

If you want to delve deep into the issues around GMO seeds, Monsanto, and other issues that may make your toes curl, blood boil, and wonder about the future of seeds, farming, and farmers. Check out Dr. Vandana Shiva and her books.

Peace.
